Make it rusty paint technique

Need something to look rusty and crusty?  Well, that is my favorite color and texture. I have a concoction for small items but some larger items really need a paint technique. Let's face it, wood doesn't rust.  This is a great technique for a picture frame, candle holder or for me today...a monogram!  Here is a picture tutorial for you:

The second paint color is Autumn Brown. It is a textured paint. I will describe it as brown with flecks of sand in it. Creates a sandpaper feel on the item being painted.  Mine dried a nice faux color that looks pretty darn close to the real rust on my nail barrel shown above.  I added a little flower to the "M."  This monogram is the topper for my shabby window which I have decorated for my MIL's bday party this weekend. Can't wait to share this cool picture display, but that's another post! xoxo

  7. Hi and thank you for the valuable hint. I have a question: do you completely cover the item with the second coat of Autumn Brown or just spray very lightly and is it all over the item?
Thanks and if you can answer I will appreciate it very much. Have a wonderful time with MIL's birthday. You've put so much time, thought and planning into making it a day I think she'll remember fondly forever.
    Warm Regards,

  8. Thank you SO MUCH Vicki Girl for this!! I, too, have my own "concoctions" for rusting things - but metal things....never dreamed you could do it to wood. LOVE this!! Thanks for sharing!! Smiles & Hugs ~ Robin

  9. You are brilliant my dear. This is one fine rust technique without all the waiting for nature to cooperate. And it looks fabulous on wood that would never rust no matter how long we waited. Love your monogram with the flower.

  10. To answer Susan's questions above, I did do slightly less Autumn Brown than I did Cinnamon. I actually was not too fond of the color when it was wet. I thought I had too much brown. I love the way it dried. I say spray lightly with the brown. You can always add more to achieve the desired color.

  22. Great idea, Vicki! You are so creative, girl! I just picked up some Autumn Brown because another blogger said it made her chicken wire look rusty. I plan on trying that out on the chicken wire I'll be putting inside my vintage tri-fold doors! :)

  27. Hi Vicki,
Love your rusty technique, I'll be trying it!
I am so glad I found your blog, I will be following! I wanted to comment on the question you posted on Karen Valentine's blog, I am Lucy's baby. If you are going to do a piece with Caromal Colours, and want it to be for outside use, you should use a poly finish. I use Minwax rub on poly. It will last through rain, sleet. and snow.
I should know, living in MN!
