Meet Shelby (red/white) and Zoey (tri-color) our Basset Hound girls. We've had Bassets for the past 12 years. This is our second bonded pair and both are rescues. These two can usually be found either roaming the fenced backyard via their doggy door or sleeping on the couch. Contrary to popular belief, Bassets needs exercise and these two enjoying doing the "Basset 500" around our house and yard. Bassets are the sweetest dogs ever and great family pets! They will let you squeeze them until their heads pop off. I've never met another animal that likes to cuddle so much.
This is Shelby. She came to us as a foster with heartworms. We knew there was no way we could let someone adopt her after caring for this sick dog for two months. We are failed foster parents! Shelby sleeps with us every night. If we try to ignore her, she howls and growls and carries on vocally in a way only Bassets know how. The backyard is her domain. She's a lizard hunter and sometimes uses the large grasses in the backyard to scratch her back. You'll see her slowly circling them in almost a trance...we call it her therapy. lol
Here's Zoey. She was a rescue from a longtime breeding and show home where the owner became very ill. Zoey unfortunately spent her first seven months in a backyard with very little contact with people. We stepped in when she was seven months old to rescue her. She spent the first night in our backyard. Slowly she came in the house and began to establish trust. Now, two years later, she is a loving family dog. She still does not trust men but otherwise has adapted completely. She is a total clown and never misses a meal. She's my morning alarm clock.
Here they are this morning on a trail walk near our house. We have numerous state parks nearby and these girls love to walk on the trails. There was plenty of horse and deer scent to follow today. Zoey even tried to roll in a bit of "deer" to bring it home with us. Yea...lol I'm guessing after a long walk today, we might see them here in these positions tonight...
This is a daily occurrence at our house! I hope you enjoyed meeting the girls. Can't wait to see all your pets at

Have a great week! La
Vicki,
ReplyDeleteThey are both so very CUTE!!

Vicki, they are so precious in their big pawed way. My daughter in law wants one so badly, but they have two rescue large dogs now and my son said maybe later. The are just so cute with those short legs, long body and long ears. I love the one of them on the sofa.
ReplyDeleteThey are darling and look like they live the "good life" quite well.
ReplyDeleteThey are so cute. Love the sleeping pictures. It looks like my two onthe couch, a Springer and a Yorkie.
ReplyDeleteOh, how precious, Vicki,
ReplyDeleteWhat would we do without our pets? I have no idea! They are part of the family--and so loving, no doubt!!!

ReplyDeleteAhh, they are so adorable. They look so huggable and squishy!
ReplyDeleteHi Vicki, I am her via Cindy's to compliment you on your very neat and tidy studio! I did notice has I was leaving a comment on Cindy's blog, that you explained there is another room! Love that you rescued the darling fur babies! BTW, Dalmatians are also extremely vocal and ours is a rescue also who was used as nothing more than a breeder then dumped. She has adapted nicely, but still runs weird circles. This is due to being confined. Glad your two have a forever home! Take care!
ReplyDeleteHi Vicki, except for our little old yorkie, our sweet dogs we have now or we've had in the past are dogs people are getting rid of.
ReplyDeleteActually I found they are easier to adapt to my home then buying a puppy and messing around with potty training.
HI Vicki! Oh, your girls are just precious! Love those big ole droopy eyes! How sweet of you and your family to take these rescue dogs. I'm sure they thank you every day! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for popping in to see me.
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
We had Bassetts when I was a young girl at home. We loved them. Our boys had a Beagle, another affectionate breed.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like your girls found the best home possible! Enjoy the love:@)

It's funny how when you rescue a dog you wonder who really rescued who? Your girls are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, how can you not love a face like that? Those droopy eyes get me every time. I love the shot of them sprawled out on the couch. They looks so relaxed!
ReplyDeleteI AM A SUCKER FOR BIG BROWN EYES. THE GIRLS ARE BEAUTIFUL- GLAD THYU=EY HAVE A WONDERFUL HOME.
ReplyDeleteI love your bassets so much, ours used to love to sing along with any music...really loving sweet dogs...
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your girls. We have a basset, he is turning 10 in March. His name is Moses and he is hilarious! I think is is the silliest dog we have ever had... I'm pretty sure he knows he is funny which is why he keeps up with his antics. He also is bouncy and playful and still runs around like crazy! Other than the gray on his droopy little face and his hearing loss, you wouldn't know he is an old man. He has so much personality... definitely not a lazy stupid breed! Amen.
ReplyDeleteShelby and Zoey are just adorable! Thanks for sharing such a beautiful part of your family with all of us.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful day,
Gail

ReplyDeleteI loved meeting your girls, they are beautiful. I'd love to give them a cuddle.
ReplyDeleteYour girls are precious!! :)
ReplyDeleteMy uncle has had Bassets for as long as I can remember...he just adores them too.
Oh my they are adorable! I love what you said "they will let you squeeze them until their heads pop off"! hehehe! That gave me a good chuckle ... I'll probably be giggling over that and the "roll in a bit of deer" all day! It must be nice to be able to give so much loving to your dogs, as mine is a bit standoffish, if you know what I mean ... he wants loving only when he wants it, otherwise he pulls away or pushes YOU away!
ReplyDeleteVicki,
ReplyDeleteYour bassets are adorable! I don't have any dogs right now but when we lived in the country we had 2, both rescued and quite a few that were dumped. I found homes for all of them, hard to give them up but with 1 horse, 2 dogs, 2 cats, 2 small boys, something had to give!
Rebecca
So cute, love that picture of them on the couch!
ReplyDeleteI just have to tell you...your dogs stole my heart, I really loved em...and my boys did too...now I want one!!~LOL Have a great day.

Hello! I just stumbled upon your blog and I love it! I think I am your newest follower! I have two bassets also! Their names are Ginger and Gus and they are my babies! You are absolutely correct bassets are the sweetest dogs ever and love their families to no end! Thanks for sharing pics!
ReplyDeleteYour furry babies are absolutely wonderful! We've never had a bassett, but we've been wonderfully blessed over the last 43 years with a St. Bernard, a golden retriever, a bloodhound, a rottweiler-German shepherd mix, and now we have a chow-German shepherd mix. Your description of these babies reminded me so much of our late, great bloodhound Burgess. We used to tell folks that he sang in the key of "R" which stands for raucous. Burgess and his rottie mix brother Archie died almost 9 years ago. We knew that the right dog was out there. Now he's ours - Lucky the farm dog, whose previous owners gave him to us when we bought our farm. Lucky patrols 55 acres. He barks away the coyotes, occasionally chases the deer, takes tender care of the chickens, and threatens the hawks and vultures that dare to invade his sky! What fun! What abundant blessings! I'm going to become a follower of your blog as soon as I finish this comment. All the critters from here on Windy Hollow Farm send their best! 8-)
ReplyDeleteI just "fell" upon your Basset introduction. Love love love Bassets, I currently am on #5, her name is Jesse and also a loving clown as they all seem to be!! Thank you for sharing the pictures, you brightened my day!
